The House of Louis Roederer has a long and breath-taking history, consistently at the top of in the world of Champagne. Their Collection range was inspired by a desire for freedom, taking the quality of their multi-vintage blends to an even higher level and a worthy successor to their renowned Brut Premier.
Collection is based on a selection of plots located in the heart of the Champagne region that are suited to its identity and where the emphasis is on sustainable growing practices. The art of blending is at the heart of their approach and Collection 243 is created from their Perpetual Reserve and oak-aged reserve wines, complemented by the finest successes of the 2018 harvest mainly from plots in Vallee de la Marne, Montagne de Reims, and Cote des Blancs.
The Perpetual Reserve makes up a significant proportion (over 30%) bringing a texture that is fleshier and more enveloping, adding overall complexity. An increased proportion of oak-aged reserve wines also go into the blend - 10% wines from 2012 to 2017 vintages, and over 50% of the finest 2018 harvest wines. The patina of age adds a lovely softness to the blend and some slightly toasted smoky notes, nicely balancing the freshness brought by the Perpetual Reserve wine.
Aged between 3 and 4 years in Roederer cellars, Collection 243 is a deep and nuanced champagne that can be enjoyed now or with a few years of cellar-ageing to further hone its complexity and draw out the unique characteristics of each blend. Brilliant gold in hue, it opens with notes of yellow fruit such as mirabelle plum, sweet lemon meringue, floral jasmine, a touch of roasted hazelnut and fresh pastries. Fine and persistent bubbles, the pure structure is lively and fresh yet complex with good density.
Louis Roederer inherited the Champagne House in 1833, and took a visionary approach to enriching his vines and mastering every stage of the wine’s creation. He forged the wine’s unique style, character, and taste and acquired some of Champagne’s grand cru vineyards to ensure the best care from soil to bottle. They now have 410 select parcels across 240 hectares of land.
