Monemvasia (Malvasia) in southern Greece has a rich history of winemaking, renowned since the Middle Ages for Mediterranean trade. This Maleatis wine from Monemvasia Winery recreates the legendary Malvasia wine by carefully blending native Assyrtiko, Roditis and Monemvasia, the latter thought to be the original Malvasia grape.
The result is a wine showing deep floral and fruity aromas of pear, apricot, spring flowers and subtle citrus. These fall on to the rich, balanced palate, filling the mouth with fruit salad before the mineral backbone provides a crisp, long finish. Try with fish and seafood dishes.
Monemvasia Winery own 30 hectares of vineyards, all planted with native varieties. Located in the Laconia wine region - the south-eastern 'finger' of the Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece - the area has an interesting topography. Lots of soil and subsoil diversity and cool winds from the neighbouring sea means it remains an excellent region for keeping ancient native grape varieties thriving. Monemvasia Winery is at the helm of this, using modern techniques whilst fully respecting the legacy of these grapes.
